Sunday Sampler

Happy Sunday!

Good Morning!  I hope your weekend has been great so far!

I have some juicy fabric to show you today for our Sunday Sampler.  I'm sure most of you, by now, know about QuiltCon, The Modern Quilt Guild's inaugural quilt convention in Feb. 2013.  There are going to be lots of classes, lectures, fun and many modern quilts!
I am so excited to be able to go to QuiltCon!

There are going to be quilt submissions for the show and several challenges have been issued for submissions also.  One of those is the Dear Stella Fabric Challenge by Dear Stella Fabrics.  The challenge is to create a modern quilt with their line of Maasai Mara line in either the Yellow/Gray or Blue/Green Colorway.  You may use coordinating prints only from Dear Stella and you may also use coordinating solid fabrics from other companies.  This is going to be a fun challenge!

You could submit to get a free fat quarter from Dear Stella and this is the one I received:

Here is the fabric I ordered from the Maasai Mara line.  I decided to go with the Blue/Green colorway and I just love it!  I ordered from Sew, Mama, Sew! and got a great deal and it came in no time flat!  Great customer service!

This is not the complete line, but it is most of it and I cannot wait to start creating my modern quilt for the challenge!  Fun, fun, fun!

If you haven't checked out all the fun that will be going on at QuiltCon, you need too!
I promise that you will not want to miss out!

Hope you have a Super Sunday!

Sewing Saturday!

Happy Saturday!

Just a quick post!  I am late posting today because we had our Modern Quilt Guild Meeting this morning and I didn't have time to post before I went.  We had a great meeting and then I did a little shopping.  Back at home now, and I plan to do a little sewing this evening.  I have binding to do on a quilt for a friend.  I may just knock it out!

Hope you have a great evening!

Fun Friday

Happy Friday!

TGIF!  Glad this week is about over!  It has been a busy week.  Here is some fun fabric I picked up in Georgia two weeks ago.  The aqua fabric is Michael Miller's Cotton Couture solid.  I have not used any of there solids yet, so I though I would pick some up and see how it is.  It is very soft to the touch and I matched it up to this lovely Parson Gray yard of Curious Nature.  I had been wanted some of this line and they just happened to have it and it matches perfectly with the aqua!  Love it!  Not sure what I am going to do with it, but we will see!  :)

Going to be a busy weekend, so I am off to get some things done!

Hope you have a great day!

Thankful Thursday!

Welcome to Thankful Thursday!

Time for Thankfulness!

Today, I am thankful for cool, crisp air in the mornings. I love this time of year.  The mornings start out cool and then most days, progress into just beautiful, warm afternoons.  The summer heat is mostly gone, although here in East TN, you never know how hot or cold it may be from one day to the next.  Mornings like this are great times to relax for a bit and then get things done...like cleaning and sewing!  I have already been busy today doing a little cleaning and I am going to knock out a sewing project this morning!

Here is a beautiful image of a cool, crisp morning at Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  I love less than an hour from the park, but I do not seem to make it there very often.  This beautiful image was taken by QT Luong.

Working Wednesday!

Happy Wednesday!

I hope today is turning out to be a good one for you!  It is a busy one for me!  Off to fun a few errands and then I will be back to sew later this afternoon!  Here is a block I did Monday night.  It is going to go into a Quilts Of Valor quilt.  I will explain more later, but I wanted to show it to you real quick!  Got to run!

Have a wonderful day!

Tuesday Talk

Happy Tuesday!

Hope you are having a wonderful day!  It's Tuesday!  Time for a little talking time!

What part of quilting or sewing are you passionate about?

For me, I am passionate about the whole entire process of quilting.  From the concept of a project or just the site of a particular fabric I have to have, the passion starts there.  If I have a particular project in mind, then I go on the hunt for fabric, if I don't already have what I need.  We don't ever have what we need though, do we?  LOL  That's why we have to buy fabric!  :)  Sometimes, I see a particular fabric and think "That would be perfect for a purse, quilt, baby quilt, etc." and sometimes I see fabric and just know that it will become something beautiful at some point.

Anyway, I am very particular about every part of putting a quilt together.  From cutting, to piecing the quilt top, I just love this process of seeing it come together.  I have learned so much in the past few years.  Cutting correctly and learning to sew the 1/4" seam straight and correctly are so important to make your project turn out well.  I am a bit of a perfectionist on this, so it sometimes take me a while on a project, because I take my time.  I make mistakes all the time, but I have learned to live with the small ones and the ones I can't, I redo if possible.

I also take a lot of time to sandwich and baste a quilt, because I learned early on, that puckers can happen easily.  Now, I just take time to pin, pin, pin!  I pin baste with curved pins.  I do not like spray basting, as I think it does not hold well and I think it gunks up your sewing machine.  Pin basting does take time, but I love the outcome.

As far as quilting goes, I love quilting.  Most all the projects I have done have been lap/throw size or baby quilts.  I have never made a queen or king size quilt to date and I am not sure how I would handle doing that on my machine.  I have only had two quilts quilted by a long arm quilter and they were special quilts.  All others I have done myself.  I do a lot of straight line quilting, because I love the clean lines.  I am now practicing to do more free motion quilting, but this takes a lot of practice.  I do OK with stippling, but I still need to learn the movement and speed better to have better results.

I also love the finishing of the quilt with binding.  I love binding!  I know some people hate it, but I have learned to do it well and I do it on my machine.  I have never done hand binding and do not plan to.  I am a modern quilter and that is how I roll!  LOL  I use a feather stitch, as some called it, to do my binding, because I like to be different.  I also use lots of pins in the process of binding, so that I don't have problems with it not staying in place while I am sewing. :)

Here is some my pin basting!

Here is one of the quilts I had quilted by a long arm quilter. I wanted a citrus pattern to go along with the fabric. This is my personal quilt and it lays across the foot of my bed for now and I use it to snuggle with. I love it! You can also see the binding I did.

Here is an example of my free motion quilting.  I did this on a t-shirt wall hanging.  I am using this project as an example of t-shirt quilts.  You can see my binding method here also!

Here is an example of my straight line quilting.
This is a patriotic wall hanging and I did wash it so it would be crinkly.

\
Here is another example of straight line quilting on the diagonal.
This project is also a wall hanging with my favorite colors of aqua blue, bright pink and lime green.
It is going to hang in my sewing room!

As you can see, I just love the process of quilting from beginning to end!
Tell me what part of quilting you are passionate about.  I would love to hear all about it!

when the old one is burnt out, a new one rises from its ashes."

Monday Mayhem

Happy Monday!

Well, Monday has started out to be a busy one!  I didn't get to work out this morning, but may get to walk later.  I have already done a little cleaning, got laundry going and getting ready to do a little sewing!  I also just found out some great news.  Kathie Lee and Hoda, from the Today Show, will be here at the University of Tennessee, broadcasting live next Monday, Oct 1!  Woohoo!  Way to go Big Orange!  We were the only SEC school to be a finalist for the Going back to College Challenge!  We get to show off our beautiful campus and city next week!  I just think that is so cool!

Anyway, I got the charity quilt pieced this weekend, along with the back and it will be off to the quilter this week.  Next, I am going to work on my guild scrap swap project today and then I have several other projects to start!  I just need to decide which one I will do first!  Ever have that problem?  There is just never enough time!  LOL

Here is a pretty fat quarter I picked up in Georgia last week.  I just love the aqua color..one of my favorite colors!  This is such a happy fabric.  I am not sure what I will do with it yet, but I just love it!

Hope you have a Marvelous Monday!!!

Sunday Sampler

Good Sunday morning to you!

I hope your day has started out to be a great one!  I have been busy so far this weekend.  I did the binding on my friends' table runner and I started sashing the charity quilt yesterday evening.  I am getting ready to work on it in just a little bit and hope to have it completed and get the back pieced, so that it can go to the quilter this week.  If I get that done, I am going to figure out what I am going to do on my scrap swap project.  Going to be a busy day!

Here is another set of fat quarters I picked up in Georgia last week.  These are just a fun kitchen print and I thought I could use these for making some cute kitchen gifts!

Hope you have a Super Sunday!

Sewing Saturday!

Happy Saturday!

Today is the first day of Autumn!  Wow...where did the Summer go!  I love the bright blue skies and the cool, crisp mornings!  The leaves have not started to change here yet, but it won't be long!  I always love the beautiful, bold colors that the leaves bring!

Today I am going to try to get a lot of sewing done.  I have binding to do for a friend and I have charity blocks to sew together, so a quilt top can be quilted.  After I get all that done, I have a tote bag, a scrap swap project and another quilt to start.

Here is some more juicy fabric I picked up last weekend.  They are batiks and I figure I can make some kind of cool Tennessee project out of them!  :)

Going to be a busy weekend!  Of course, there will be football involved too...Go VOLS and BRONCOS!

Happy Autumn!

Fun Friday!

TGIF---It's Friday!

Hello and welcome to Friday!  I thought this was going to be a productive week and in some ways it was, but as far as sewing goes, it was not.  I did, however, finish the table runner last night and I will post pics at the first of the week.  I want to get it into the mail first, so I will be doing that today!

Here are a couple of fun fat quarters I bought at a nice little quilt shop in Georgia last weekend.  These are just fun and so pretty!  Not sure what I am going to do with them, but I love them.  I bought some other fabric that I will share as we go!

Don't forget to check out the QuiltCon Block Challenge post today!

Hope you have a Fantastic Friday!

Thankful Thursday

Happy Thursday!

Today is Thankful Thursday!
I am very thankful today for family and friends who support me in sewing and quilting endeavors.  I love to sew and quilt so much that I have become very passionate about it.  I am hoping one day soon to start a business, but first I want to learn more and become really good with my techniques.  I have come a long way from when I started  three years ago.  I love the modern techniques of quilting tied into the traditions of old.  I have learned so much, but one thing I definitely want to get better at is free motion quilting.  I have got to start practicing, so that I can learn some patterns other than stippling.  Now, I love stippling, but I am still not great with it and need more practice with it also!

Below are two projects that I did with free motion stippling.  They turned out pretty good and the good thing with stippling is that it is very forgiving.  I am going to keep practicing this and also try to learn a couple of new patterns to try along the way!

Working Wednesday

It's Wednesday!

Today is Working Wednesday!  It is time for me to get it in gear!  I have not done anything over the past few days, as far as sewing goes!  Got to quilt my table runner today and get it done.  It has been on my list to do this past week, but sadly, I have not been able to get to it.  I have had many things to do and have not been sewing, so I am ready!

Here is another unfinished project to work on at some point.  This is a modern quilt I started earlier in the year.  This is only part of it, but the good news is that the top is put together and it is partially quilted.  LOL  Got to get it finished soon!

Have a great day!

Tuesday Talk

Happy Tuesday!

It's starting out to be a very rainy day today.  We have needed some rain, but I don't think we needed this much at one time.  Oh, well!  After today, the weather is supposed to be great with lower temperatures...it is going to feel more like fall!

Here is a simple quilt top that I have not quilted yet.  It is supposed to be a Potato Chip pattern quilt, but I changed it up a little and just did the squares and put sashing in between.  This is a quilt for my son, who like some of our family, is a NC Tar Heels fan.  At one point, he wanted to go to college there, but ended up staying here in TN.  I still wanted to make him a quilt and I started this one almost two years ago.  Then, I got it back out to piece together and then never quilted it because I got busy with other projects.  Imagine that!  I am thinking about getting it out again and quilting it very soon.  I would like to give it to him one of these days!  LOL

So, how many quilt tops do you have finished, but not quilted?
I have five right now I can think of!  I know that is bad, so I am going to try to do something about all those!  LOL  I also have blocks that were put together from several online bees and one from our guild that I participated in and need to sew those together.  I have four sets of those and then they need to be quilted.  Ugh...I need to get this stuff done, but I have got to make time to do them!

Let me know how your unfinished projects are going!

Monday Mayhem!

It's Monday!

Just a quick post today!  Time to start another wonderful week.  Well, as much as I had hoped last week would be extremely productive, it was not.  I did not get near as much done, but that happens sometimes.  This weekend was not extremely productive either, but it was a pretty relaxing weekend.  I tell you more about my weekend later.

I have been sharing several of my local modern guild's charity quilts.  This is the latest one and this one is going to be sashed in Navy Blue Kona and will have a pieced backing with several blocks and Kona Coal.  We decided to do this quilt a little different.  We asked our members to do improv blocks and this is what they came up with.  These blocks are all so different and they are gorgeous!  This is going to be one great quilt!  I have the privilege of sewing the blocks together with the sashing.  We had a sew-in last week and we laid all the blocks down so that we could arrange them and this is what we came up with.  It will have the two inch Navy sashing between the blocks.  Once it is finished, it will go to our quilter to be quilted and then I will bind it and our guild will send it to its new destination here in town!

Let me know what you think!

Sunday Sampler

Happy Sunday!

I hope your day has started out well.  I wanted to share one of the charity quilts our Modern Guild did recently.  We asked our members to put together a Nine Patch Block with Kona Coal as the middle block and to use blue and green solid or print fabric for the other eight blocks.  Once we collected all the blocks, we cut them and made them into disappearing nine patch blocks, arranged them and then they were sewn together.  This is the beautiful quilt that appeared.  It has been been quilted and given to our charity to a deserving recipient.  I love how this quilt turned out and I love that our ladies are so giving with their talent and time.  It is truly a blessing to be in such a wonderful guild and to be able to give back to our community!

Fun Friday!

It's Friday!

Welcome to Friday and to the end of another week!  I wanted to quickly share with you a cute piece of fabric I received in a swap recently!  It is the cutest fat quarter of sewing machine fabric!  It is so FUN!  I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet.  I have to find the perfect project for it.  It will probably be something for my sewing room, but I don't know what yet.  In the mean time, I am going to hoard it and wait til I get a great idea, because it is just too special for just anything!  If you have any ideas, please let me know!

Have a Fantastic Friday!

Thankful Thursday

It's Thursday and it's time to be Thankful!

Today, I am thankful to our Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild for finding a charity that we could become involved in.  We started making charity blocks last year.  We decided on the type of block and the colors and we ask our members to make a 12 1/2" block or two, once a quarter.  We then turned them in, put them together, quilted them and passed them along to a wonderful charity in our town that helps single mothers.  (I will talk more about this charity soon, as there are many exciting things happening!)

Here is one of the quilts we have done, recently.  We had decided on warm colors in oranges, reds, yellows and pinks and decided to do a pinwheel block.  As you can see, there are a number of different blocks, besides the basic pinwheel.  It turned out beautifully with all the variety of blocks and colors and we even had a few extra blocks to piece on the backing.  Our quilter did a simple meandering stipple on the quilt, so that it would not take away from the movement of the blocks.  I just think it is gorgeous.  The girls in our guild are so talented and so giving and love doing our charity blocks for such a great cause.

We did four different quilts this past year, in different block designs.  Two were in warm colors and two were in cool colors.  I will feature all of these soon.  We have decided to adopt this charity for the next several years, because we like their mission.  We also decided to do charity blocks every other month, instead of once a quarter.  We are doing improv blocks now in certain colors each time.  I am so excited, because I love doing the charity blocks for such a worthy cause.  I will share more with you on the blocks, quilts and the charity in the next little bit!

Because that's what kindness is.  It's not doing something for someone else because they can't, but because you can.

Have a very Thankful Thursday!

Working Wednesday

Happy Wednesday!

Today has started out as a great day!  I walked three miles on the greenway and go some fresh air in this cooler weather.  Now, it is time for Working Wednesday.  I have several projects in progress right now.  I am working on some Christmas cards for my sister, so that is the first order of business today.  I started on them last week and I am going to work on them for awhile this morning.

Then, I am going to work on basting and quilting the table runner.  I have both the front and back pieced now and it is close to being finished.  Here's a sneak peek of the front and back:

Hope you like it!  Let me know what you think!
I will keep you updated on it's progress over the next few days!

Tribute Tuesday

Today is Tuesday and it's Patriot Day...
a time for remembrance.

Eleven years ago today, on 9-11-2001, our country was attacked by our enemies and we have never been the same since.  I remember that day well.  I worked for a major cable network company here in East TN and of course, we had access to satellite feeds.  As soon as the attacks happened, we, in the editing department and engineering, had all monitors tuned in to the major networks.  My son was in 3rd grade at the time and was at school.  I have never been so stunned and in shock, as that morning.  All I could think about at that moment, was that I wanted to hold and hug my son.  I called the school, as did many other parents, and they were all safe and well taken care of.  He was in a Lutheran school and they were watching what was going on, but they were also saying many prayers throughout the day.  I went to pick my son up that afternoon and probably gave him one of the longest and biggest hugs I had ever given him.

We had family in New York City, so we were extremely worried.  I was also worried that more planes would strike more major cities like Atlanta, where one of my sisters lived.  To add to that worry, my other sister and her husband were in Omaha, NE in the Air Force at Offutt Air Force Base, where President Bush was re-routed in all the chaos.  Needless to say, I was a mess on the inside.  Luckily for all family members, everyone was OK.  They were the lucky ones.

There were so many that lost their lives in the attacks and so many families that were directly affected. My heart goes out to all the families who lost love ones in this senseless act against of our country. I want to say Thank You to all who died for our freedom and to all who continue to fight for our freedom. We should never forget this tragedy.  It has touched each of us in some way.

This photo reminds me of the hope rising from the dust.
Raising this flag from the rubble showed me that we are a country of hope and faith.
Through tragedy, we have risen from the ashes and will remain strong.

Monday Mayhem

Welcome to Monday Mayhem!

It's Monday and I say it is going to be a great day and a great week!
The Tennessee Volunteers won this weekend and so did Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos!
It was also a cool and beautiful crisp weekend here in East TN!  It felt like fall was in the air!  As we know here in TN, the weather changes as soon as you turn around, so I am sure we will be in for more hot weather, before fall really sets in!

I have the fall table runner top done and I am piecing the back this morning.  I hope to have it all put together and finished later today.  I will show you pics tomorrow.  :)  For now, I do have a sneak peek of an upcoming project.  October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I am making a special quilt for someone and will share more info soon.  This is part of the fabric I picked out because her favorite colors are bright pink and light blue.  I stumbled upon the blue fabric and just love it and the pink print also had a blue dots in it.  I am going to pair it with some pink and blue Kona solids.  I am working on finding just the right pattern and I can't wait to get started on the quilt!  I will keep you in the loop about it's story and progress, starting very soon!

Let me know what you think!

Sunday Sampler

It's Sunday!

Time for a little sample of Mother Nature!  Today happens to be a beautiful day here in East TN!  The temps the morning were in the mid 50's and it is only supposed to get into the upper 70's today!  Definitely a little bit of fall weather in the air and I am loving it!

I worked yesterday on my table runner and the top is finished.  I am going to piece the back this afternoon and then baste it and try to get it quilted today also.  I will take some more pics of the process and share with you this week.

I wanted to share a photo I took on the way home one day.  We had had some rainstorms and peaking through the clouds was a beautiful rainbow.  I had my camera, so I pulled over to get some pics.  As I was taking them, I noticed a second rainbow reflecting!  What an awesome sight!  Now, the photo itself is not great, but you will at least see the two rainbows!
God is so awesome in showing us the wonders of nature!

Sewing Saturday!

Sew Saturday!

Hope you all are having a super Saturday so far!

Today is going to be a day of football sewinf and more sewing!  I am working on my table runner for my swap today.  I am excited to finally get to working on this project.  I started cutting out fabric last night and I am going to finish that up and get to it!  I finally figured out a design, so now I am ready to get it started and done!  I will keep you informed on the progress and have pics for you soon!

As far as football goes, Yes, I am a University of Tennessee Volunteers Fan.  I sometimes have to clarify, because of the other UT with the burnt orange colors!  As I say, they may do football bigger in Texas, but we do it a lot brighter here in Tennessee---Go Vols!  LOL  I also be watching some Nascar tonight at Richmond, as my driver, #88 Dale Jr, is starting on the pole!  WooHoo!  And, of course, Sunday will be another day of sewing and Broncos football!
WooHoo...Go Peyton..Can't wait!

Check back tomorrow for my table runner progress and other good things!

Have a Spectacular Saturday!

Fun Friday!

It's Friday!!

Time to have some fun!  I have finally been able to get back to sewing!  Last night I made a mug rug for a gift and I will post it soon.  It has to go to it's recipient first!  Then, I was able to get the binding on a quilt and that will be posted soon!

Today has started off with a great walk of three miles on a greenway and I am going to be working on my table runner.  I am so excited to finally get this started.  I will take pics and update you on it's progress.  It's going to be fun!

As summer is about to officially end soon, I was thinking about our beach trip and all the fun we had.  I took this picture of all the colorful beach umbrellas and it's just a fun and happy reminder of why I love the beach!  Such bright and colorful fun...It makes me happy!

Have a Fantastic Friday!!

Thankful Thursday!

It's Thankful Thursday!

I hope you are having a great day!

Today, I am thankful for leftover scraps of fabric!
These blocks are for a charity quilt our guild is doing.  We just turned them in and I will be putting together all the blocks with sashing before sending it to be quilted.  The colors for this quilt are grays, blues and greens in solid fabric and we could do any inprov 12 1/2" block.  I recently made a pillow using these solids along with a print and had plenty of the Kona solids left.  So, I whipped out two blocks.  I love these colors.  They are Kona Grass, Kona Marine and Kona Medium Gray.  I love when I have big scraps of fabric that I can use for other projects!  It's always so fun to see what you can come up with!  I can't wait to see all the blocks put together.
I will definitely post as soon as it is done!

Don't forget to check out the Modern Quilt Guild Blog for the QuiltCon Block Challenge post today!  It's Day 9 and there are some pretty awesome blocks on there and there is so much inspiration.
I know I would love to make a quilt with every one of the blocks featured so far,
because they are all so awesome!

Tuesday Talk

Happy Tuesday!

Today is another great start to the week!  I worked really hard over the weekend, but I did get to watch a little football and Nascar!  Go Vols and Roll Tide!  Yes, I live in TN and I am a Volunteer fan, but I do like Alabama and of course, the SEC.  Anyway, I am finishing some orders today, so it will be another busy, busy day!

I wanted to share my third and final block from the QuiltCon Block Challenge.  It is being featured, along with many other wonderful blocks, over on the Modern Quilt Guild Blog today.  I really enjoyed making this block and I may think about using this as a block in a future quilt!

Don't forget to follow the Modern Quilt Guild over the next three weeks, as they will be featuring all the quilt blocks until Sept 22.

Let me know what you think!

Have a Terrific Tuesday!

Monday Mayhem Labor Day

It's Labor Day and Monday Mayhem!

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend!  It's hard to believe that this is the unofficial end to the summer.  Wow!  This has been a busy weekend.  I have been working to finish up my card order and I hope to get to sew later today.  I haven't sewn anything in about a week, so I am itching to get to work on some projects!  Here is a look at some fabric I picked out for a tote bag my sister has requested.  She loved the tote bag I made for my swap, so she said she wanted one.  The colors for the bag were to be brown, cream, yellow, red and green.  So, I happened to be out at Joann's the other day and came across this beautiful fabric.  The picture does not do it justice.  It is a little more golden in color and I had Kona solids in Chocolate, Espresso, Corn and Grass Green to pair with it.  this will be a project I do sometime very soon in the next few weeks!  :)

Let me know what you think of this fabric!

Have a Marvelous Monday and a safe Labor Day!

Sunday Sampling

Happy Sunday to you!

I hope your day has started out to be a peaceful one!

It's Labor Day weekend and I have been working hard on some projects.  My handmade card order is just about finished and will be out the door early this week.  As I finished it, I do have to start on an order of Christmas cards, but I am going to take a break for a day or two to work on my next sewing project, which is a Table Runner for the SewSwapIt group.  Below are the fabrics that I intend to incorporate into this project.  I just love the Pumpkin Fabric!  I have paired it with some different Kona solids.  I am not sure if I will use all of them, but we will see.  I think I have a design in mind, so I am ready to get started!

Let me know what you think of my choices!

Labor Day Weekend and Modern Blocks!

Happy Saturday!

Can you believe it is September 1st!  Wow!!  This year has flown by and I am not sure where the summer went, but it's Labor Day weekend...the unofficial end to summer!  Here in East TN, we will have warm weather for some time to come.  Hopefully soon, we will start to cool down a little, like we did in August and have some crisp, cool nights.  I love the fall!

Anyway, I am working on some things this weekend, like finishing my card order and then I might get into a little sewing.  I have a few projects that are on the table ready to get started and I can't wait!

Today is Day 6 of the Modern Quilt Guild's QuiltCon Block Challenge posts.  There are some amazing blocks, so stop by and check them out for some great inspiration!

Have a Super Saturday!
